The Coromandel Peninsula is a holiday playground, particularly for Auckland residents because it is so easily accessible from the city. We just had to nose around a bit to see what all the fuss was about.
We walked down a trail to get to Cathedral Cove. Beautiful coastline!
The ocean has caused a hole to be made through the large outcropping of sedimentary rock.
We also went to Hot Water Beach, where hot springs bubble up through the sand at low tide and you can dig a hole to make a pool. You and hundreds of other people! Since the hot springs are quite localized, everyone wants to be in the same little area.
But when you got into the pool, it was great. Not deep, but different. In some places the springs were bubbling through the sands and hot enough to burn your feet. Careful where you sit!
We looked up an old friend of Huia's in Whitianga. Ron had just returned from two days fishing and was busy cleaning fish. He graced us with some very fresh snapper fillets and a lemon from his tree. Yum!
Our next stop, the far north.
